In this assignment I will compare similarities and differences between the two different articles, and tie it to another weeks reading, and I will go into what each author is trying to argue for social workers to understand, I will use the “indigenous”, “aboriginal”, and “First Nations” interchangeable. Dr. June Yee’s, critical anti racism praxis: the concept of whiteness implicated, and Dr. Baskin’s Structural social work as seen from an Aboriginal perspective. Yee argues that social workers should understand that the concept of whiteness is what holds in place the current racist structures within society today. if social workers fail to grasp this concept, that will increase the dominant groups’ position within society by the “denial of racism” (J, Yee, Page-88 Line-10) Yee, also states that whiteness perpetuates and maintains the dominant power within social organizations today, because of this it makes it difficult for antiracism workers from helping in the fight against racism, because the doment group doesn’t want to lose the power they currently hold, This is important because it’s this that prevents the world we live in today from changing into a better one, and stops anti racism social workers/practitioners from completing their world changing duties and goals. Therefor more racism, and other forms of oppression are less likely to remain unchallenged in the workplace, and beyond. To paraphrase, June Yee, also stated that if people, including social workers focused on the cultural aspect of an individual or group, then that would distract social work practitioners from combatting unconscious/conscious bias or racism (J, Yee Page-90-line-18) On the top of page 91 Yee, also states that the anti-oppressive practice and anti-racism approach have been “co-opted” into mainstream practice, that continues to uphold the more dominant group’s position within our society. On the same page, Yee, also states that versions of anti oppressive practice does not discuss the ways minority or marginalized people could be empowered by bringing down structures of oppression such as “colonialism, patriarchy, heterosexism and ableism” Yee, also stated that “one” cannot speak about whiteness until they fully grasp that whiteness is a social construction. Yee is arguing that without a historical background you continue to further the domenit groups
