Community Advocacy is building upon the partnership with Safe Kids of St. Louis by participating in a statewide expansion of the Safe Sleep Program into the state of Illinois. The Safe Sleep Program was established to educate infant caregivers on the merits of safe sleep practices, such as overlays, rollover deaths, and other SID related injuries. Temporary economic setback and limited funding spurred Illinois to look beyond conventional views and seek new insights to address the state’s high infant mortality rate which has been attributed to unsafe sleep practices, environments, and other child safety concerns. As a result of the growth and success of Missouri’s program, the initiative gained quick attention in Illinois, and was adopted in the counties of Cahokia, St. Clair, and Madison. Since the onset of this cross market collaboration, the program is becoming a major cornerstone for education, and tangible resources.
