“Achondroplasia is caused by mutations in the FGFR3 gene which codes for a protein (fibroblast growth factor receptor 3) that is important for the maintenance of one and brain tissue” (medicineNet). When the gene is mutated, that limits the process of ossification, which is basically the natural process of bone formation. “Achondroplasia is one of the oldest known birth defects. The frequency of achondroplasia is estimated to range from about 1 in 10,000 births in Latin America to about 12 in 77,000 in Denmark.” (medicineNet) The causes of dwarfism may vary depending on how severe or what kind of disorder the patient may be experiencing. Another cause may be due to the pituitary gland not being able to function correctly. When the gland functions improperly is results in underproduction of the growth hormone. It is a prime example of how dwarfs live their everyday lives. The show it staring the Roloff family. This family is a prime example of how not to let your characteristics get in the way. Amy and Matt Roloff are the married couple starred on the show along with their four children. Both parent are dwarfs but they both live prosperous lives. Matt, an entrepreneur, have a successfully career in the software industry and he also run several other businesses, including his large pumpkin farm. Amy, also travel and speak to different groups along with her husband. Her strong lobe of cooking them to their own business creating their own salsa. Interestingly, in 2009, Amy started her own charity to raise funds for the Dwarf Athletic Association of America. The reason behind this is to paint of picture of how being successful does not require you to look a certain way or to be a certain size.
