I believe that animal lovers, pet owners, and anyone who feels the need to nurture or protect others are the intended audience of this advertisement. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is all about saving animals and ensuring that they are treated humanely. Anyone who cares about animals could appreciate what they are doing, so it makes them the perfect target audience. Additionally, the ASPCA claims that "Animals can't speak for themselves, so it is up to us to do it for them," and "You can help these animals when nobody else will." Those words can be highly persuasive to anyone who has the need to nurture or protect others.

The ASPCA utilizes pathos to persuade viewers to join their cause. The very first thing most people will see after looking at the advertisement is the large, gut-wrenching picture of an extremely malnourished dog. Sorrow is what most people will feel when seeing this. No one likes to see or hear about others suffering, and that is exactly what the ASPCA is doing here. They intend to make viewers feel even more sorrowful when stating, "Thousands of animals each year are malnourished and mistreated." Most people will find it disturbing to hear about such awful things taking place on such a broad scale, and this will encourage them to join the cause and get those numbers down. Additionally, the ASPCA utilizes ethos to persuade viewers. They establish their credibility by highlighting previous investigations and court cases.
