APA Writing Style Analysis

Improved Essays
APA style of writing has been a huge part of my college career. Although this particular writing technique can be challenging at times, I believe my APA writing skills have become more developed as I have been required to utilize them more in each class. APA adds consistency and clarity in any writing by taking the emphasis off of how information is presented and focuses on the information itself. In the beginning, when I was learning the ins and outs APA, I was thoroughly confused in every way. I had no idea why punctuation went here, and why headings and margins had to be there. After finishing my first couple papers it began to make sense. Everything looked so clean, crisp and quite professional, if I do say so myself.

Secondly, knowing the audience that the speaker is talking to helps convey the tone because it gives the speaker a sense of what word choice and emotions need to be hit in order to get the response that is desired. This quote by Vince Lombardi states, “We didn’t lose the game, we just ran out of time.” That quote approximately means that just because a scoreboard states that you lost a game doesn’t mean you didn’t have the potential in the end to beat a team with a little more time. Using that meaning of the quote, the reader can assume that this quote was wrote by someone like a coach of some kind which also helps the reader know that the audience must be athletes. With that, people can infer that this coach was trying to invoke…

Reflective writing as a genre allows for a combination of personal reflection and critical thinking all intertwined into one. I turned my reflection essay into a new reflection that focused on a different level of the education system that would allow for me to reflect on my first semester of college to back up my allegations against the school system. When attempting to revise my essay in a new way I reread my old one and found an interesting theme screaming out of the paper. It was saying, “high school and Regents did not prepare me for college.” I took the idea a little further and expanded it to the SAT, that is a similar testing style to Regents, that similarly did not prepare me for college, and through research I found that income status…

“Development of disciplinary writing,” (Roozen, 182) the act of looking at a person’s literacies and seeing the improvement of writing. I found through my interview, of Tais Mitchell, that this literacy practice is true. After that we discussed barriers that he has overcome in his life to become an improved writer. Next, Tais told me about the things that have best influenced his literacy skills to this day.…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

The American Psychological Association (APA) style writing was first founded in 1929 by some Scientist and Businessmen to provide some consistency in writing styles (Bethel University, 2014). APA style writing covers elements such as abbreviations, punctuation, and the most important for the students of Bethel University in-text citations and references. Some of the disadvantages are that APA style writing can be confusing sometimes because of the in-text citations and references. If you do not properly know how to cite a reference it can become tough, and that is how plagiarism begins (Bethel University, 2014).…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
