In Lord of the Rings, dwarves and elves assist the humans in defeating the powerful trolls lead by an evil magical floating eye. In the universe of Game of Thrones, there is little magic, only adding to the realism. Most of the characters of Game of Thrones believe that magic has completely died out. While dragons used to exist in the world of Westeros, they eventually began to grow smaller and die out. A princess named Daenerys Targaryen comes the closest to using the magical creatures of Game of Thrones. Daenerys father was dethroned by the usurper Robert Baratheon, and she now is raising an army across a large sea separating Westeros from where she now resides. While she owns three infant dragons she is never able to controll them, and locks them up until she can learn to tame them. The dragons are not ultra-powerful creatures, unlike other series, they are mortal and have to be protected. She is able to buy and free a massive army of slaves, which she then plans to use this army with the help of her dragons to claim her rightful place on the throne. In the north of Westeros, a sworn brotherhood, called the Night’s watch, sit atop a 700 foot wall to protect the world from magical undead warriors. Apart from the Night’s Watch, no one else believes in their existence. This means that magic is essentially extinct in the world of Westeros. Without the magical element in Game of Thrones each competitor for the throne is on an even playing field. The fate of Westeros does not hinge on who can ally with the all-powerful magical race of beings and take the throne. This allows the series to remain unpredictable as well by not having
