Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

In the film “12 O’clock High,” leadership and followership play a significant role in the plot, and it has been used for decades by the military as a training exercise. The same principles were used in the Human Factors class to help the students determine their leadership styles and how to be a better follower. From the very first few scenes, “12 O’clock High” was a true story about how a bombing unit in World War 2 bounced back from a period of bad luck and poor training to become one of the best units the U.S. Army Air Force had. As the plot begins, Colonel Davenport is shown the Officer in Command of the bomber unit. While he participates in every bombing run, and has a close relationship with most of his men, his men are performing poorly…

When I’m helping as an assistant coach for the junior golf program at the Ken McDonald Golf Course, I’m teaching kids what I know. I’m passing on the information that I’ve learned over the years, telling them what’s right from wrong. If they make a mistake, I correct them, and if they perform a task well, I praise them. Now, although I’m not teaching people who are ten years younger than I, I also lead the way on my VEX Robotics team in my engineering class.…

I see the big question “what is effective leadership?” emerging so far in the Lord of the Flies book. As Jack and Ralph compete for leader, some of the children must have considered how leadership under each party would have been. We know that Jack is a leader because he was leading the choir boys around the island and able to control them into following his orders even when they don’t want to. Even after knowing that Jack had leadership experience and not knowing whether or not Ralph would be a good leader, he was elected over Jack.…

Lastly, the final basic step of leadership, I plan to delve into is coaching/mentoring. While, yes we do have great NASA mentors, some students would prefer and are comfortable learning from another experienced student. In order to mentor effectively, a leader must first know what they are talking about. They next need to address the needs of the individual and what their question is.…

The principal executed a unique leadership style that incorporated various theoretical applications. One such style observed during school leadership team meetings was the distributive style of leadership. The distributed leadership model, "does not necessarily imply that the entire faculty controls decisions related to the school. Rather, principals create leadership positions that allow capable and willing teachers to work in a more focused leadership capacity" (Giouroukakis & Natsiopoulou, 2010). During school leadership team meetings, the principal included teacher-leaders as part of the decision making team to collaborate and provide input on key decisions that impact student learning.…

To reflect on the many theories, strategies, and planning processes discussed throughout this course, one section particularly stood out to me. The 21 responsibilities of the school leader presented in the Marzano book provided some insights into frequently occurring responsibilities of the school leader. As stated in the book, the “wide array of behaviors explains why it is so difficult to be an effective school leader. (Marzano , Waters, & McNulty, 2005, pg. 41).…

As previously discussed, the effective school movement was highlighted with the conviction that school leaders were in important component to schools that support the learning of students of color and of low-SES. According to Raymond Calabrese (1988), a professor of educational administration, an ethical school leader is the epitome of effective schools and one cannot exist without the other because an “effective principal must be an ethical principal” (p. 4). Branson (2014d) adds that “ethicalness is the cornerstone of leadership” and so “if it isn’t ethical, it isn’t leadership” (p. 452). Moreover, critical theorist, Paulo Freire (2014), suggests educators must live and practice ethics everyday; since “ethics defines what must be,” “establishes the…
