What is a Combination Reaction? |
A reaction where two or more elements or compounds (reactants) combine to form a single compound (product). Ex: C + O2 = CO2 (C4+ + 2O2- = CO2) Ex: 2S + 3O2 + 2SO3 (S6+ + 3O2- = SO) |
|
How is the "swap and drop" method used to solve the Combination Reaction, for N2 + O2? |
N has a 5+ charge and O has a 2- charge, when you swap and drop without carrying the charge (+ or -), you end with N2O5, which is the answer. This method works MOST of the time. |
|
How is the "swap and drop" method used to solve the Combination Reaction, for Al +S? |
Al has a 3+ charge and Sulfur has a 2- charge, when the swap and drop without carrying the charge (+ or -), you end with Al2S3 which is the answer. This method works MOST of the time. |
|
What is a Decomposition Reaction? |
A single compound, becoming multiple reactions. Ex: H2CO3 = H2O +CO2 Ex: 2NaHCO3 = Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2 Ex: 2KClO3= 2KCl + 3O2 |
|
What is a Single Replacement Reaction? |
A type of chemical reaction where an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in that compound.
Ex: Mg + 2HCl -------> MgCl2 +H2 Element + Compound---> New Compound & New Element Ex: Zn + H2SO4--------> ZnSO4 + H2 (g) |
|
What is a Double Replacement Reaction? |
A Double Replacement Reaction have Ions that exchange partners. Ex: AgNO3 + NaCl (+) (-) (+) (-) = AgCl + NaNO3 Ex: Al (No3)3 + 3NaOH Al 3+ +3NO3- + Na+ + OH- = Al(OH)3 +3NaNO3 |
