In the spring of 1919, Sigma Brother, Charles Robert Samuel Taylor shared with Arizona Cleaver his idea for a sister organization to a fraternity. One has to find it amazing that the bond between our organizations has survived 94 years. A legacy begins and it started with a lovers stroll.

How did Zeta come about?

Five coeds envisioned a sorority which would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise consciousness of their people, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members. These women believed that sorority elitism and socializing overshadowed the real mission for progressive organizations and failed to address fully the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular.

-Autherine Lucy Foster was the first black student to attend the University of Alabama, which she did in 1956. She’s also a sister of Zeta Phi Beta sorority. -Bernette Johnson is the first African-American woman to serve on the Louisiana Supreme Court. She’s also the first to become Chief Justice. -Camille Cooper, First round pick Camille Cooper of the 2001 WNBA draft for the Los Angeles Sparks -Esther Rolle was a Zeta Phi Beta sister. She’s most popularly known for her role as Florida Evans on Good Times and Roots. -Evelyn Fields is the first woman, and first African American, to hold the position of Rear Admiral. She is also the former director of the Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Corps Operations and the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps. - Julia Carson was the first woman and first African American to represent the 7th District.
