Variable
A symbol (often a letter) that represents a number.
Proportion
An equation that states two ratios are equal.
Ratio
A comparison of two quantities that share a fixed multiplicative relationship.
Rational Number
A number that can be written as a/b where a and b are integers, but b is not equal to 0.
Equation
A mathematical sentence that contains an equal sign.
2 + y = 7 7 + 3 = 10 |
Algebraic Expression
A mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols.
x + 8 4(m-b) |
Term
A number, variable, or product of numbers and variables. Terms are seperated by plus (+) or minus (-) signs.
Coefficient
A number that is multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression. A variable by itself has a coefficient of 1. (Ex: y= 1y.)
Coordinate Plane (Coordinate Grid)
A plane formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line called the x-axis and a vertical number line called the y-axis.
Ordered Pair
A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane.
Origin
The point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect on the coordinate plane; (0,0)
Quadrant
The x- and y-axes divide the coordinate plane into four regions. Each region is called a quadrant. (I, II, III, IV) Counterclockwise starting with quadrant in upper right corner of coordinate plane.
Function
An input/output relationship that has exactly one output for each input.
Linear Equation
An equation whose solutions form a straight line on a coordinate plane.
y = 2x + 1. |
Linear Function
A function whose graph is a straight line.
Associative Property
The property that states that for all real numbers a, b, and c, the sum (or product) is always the same, regardless of their grouping.
2 + 3 + 8 = (2 + 3) + 8 = 2 + (3 + 8) 2 * 3 * 8 = (2 * 3) * 8 = 2 * (3 * 8) |
Commutative Property
The property that states that two or more numbers can be added (or multiplied) in any order without changing the sum (or product)
8 + 20 = 20 + 8 6 * 12 = 12 * 6 |
Distributive Property
The property that states if you multiply a sum by a number, you will get the same result if you multiply each addend by that number and then add the products.
5(20 + 1) = 5 * 20 + 5 * 1 |
Order of Operations
A rule for evaluating expressions: 1st perform the operations in parentheses (from inside out), then compute powers and roots, then multiplication and division left to right, and then all addition and subtraction left to right.
Numerical Expression
An expression that contains only numbers and operations (no variables).
Relation
Any set of ordered pairs (x,y).
Domain
All of the x-values in a function.
Range
All of the y-values in a function.
How to evaluate an expression-
Substitute given values for variables and follow the order of operations to arrive at the solution.
Constant
A number that does not change in value in an expression or equation.
Inequality
Shows that two expressions are NOT equal by using greater than (>), greater than or equal to, less than (<), or less than or equal to.
Equation
Shows two expressions are equal by using the equal sign (=).
