Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease
(1) Early vaccination for S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and N. meningitidis;
(2) Prophylactic PCN for children until 6yo - start at 4mo; (3) Folic acid supplements due to chronic hemolysis; (4) Management of painful crises with morphine, supplemental oxygen; (5) Hydroxyurea: enhances HbF levels, interfering with sickling; (6) Transfusions- not unless absolutely necessary like in acute chest syndrome, stroke, priaprism, cardiac decompensation; (7) Bone Marrow Transplantation |
Where is the clivus
What does the vidian canal connect
the petrous portion of the carotid canal to the pterygoid fossa
What are the canals that enter/exit the pterygoid fossa
foramen rotundum
vidian inferior orbital fissure sphenopalatine pterygomaxillary pterygopalatine canal |
What does the pterygomaxillary fissure lead to
masticator space
What does the sphenopalatine space lead to
to the superior meatus
What does the foramen rotundom lead to
middle cranial fossa
What does the vidian canal lead to
the petrous portion of the carotid canal
What is the relation of the carotid canal and the foramen lacerum
after the ICA travels medial in the petrous portion and goes superior it is traveling through part of the foramen lacerum briefly.
Where does the vidian artery go after it reaches the petrous portion of the the carotid canal
inferiorly through the cartilagenous portion of the foramen lacerum
What doe the inferior orbital fissure lead into
Anterior opening of the pterygopalatine fossa and into orbit (transmits infraorbital nerve and artery)
Where does the pterygopalantine fossa lead to
Inferior canal leading to greater & lesser palatine foramina to oral cavity (transmits descending palatine nerve and artery
What is the relationship of the foramen rotondum to the vidian canal
the foramen rotondum is superolateral to the vidian canal
