What are the five types of coastal erosion ? |
•Solution •Corrasion •Abrasion •Attrition •Hydraulic action
What is solution ? |
The dissolving of soluble chemicals in rocks such as limestone or chalk. |
What is corrasion ? |
The sea picks up the rocks, throws them at the cliff and they wear away. |
What is abrasion ? |
Sandpapering effect of rocks when they grind over a rocky surface. |
What is attrition? |
Rocks colliding and becoming rounder and smoother. |
What is hydraulic action ? |
The power of the waves as they hit the cliff. The trapped air is forced into the rocks and they break. |
What is longshore drift and how does it happen ? |
The movement of pebbles moving along the beach. Swash washes pebbles up the beach at an angle due to prevailing winds and backwash washes it back in a straight line creating a zigzag pattern. This process continues and pebbles keep moving along the beach. |
What are the four types of transportation processes ? |
•Solution •Suspension •Saltation •Traction |
What is solution ? |
Dissolving of soluble chemicals in the sea from limestone or chalk. |
What is suspension? |
Sea picks up small pebbles and carries them. |
What is saltation? |
Bouncy movement of pebbles on seabed that are too heavy to be suspended. |
What is traction ? |
Large rocks rolling on the seabed. |
When does deposition happen ? |
When the water slows down and waves lose their energy and power. |
