What is insulin?
Insulin is a hormone that regulates glucose metabolism. It is measured in units and is administered by injection.
Can Insulin be given orally?
No, Because the enzymes in the GI tract destroy it. Instead it is administered subcutaneously or intravenously
What are three classification of Insulin?
Rapid, intermediate or long acting.
What are rapid-acting insulins?
Rapid acting insulin begin acting within 1 hour and peak in 2 to 4 hours; actions may last 5-7 hours. Insulins are administed subcutaneously except for regular insulin, which can be given IV
What is R insulin?
Regular insulin
What is Humulin?
Humulin is synthesized in the laboratory using recombinant DNA technololgy.
What is pork insulin?
Pork insulin is made from the porcine pancrease.
What is Humalog?
Humalog (lispro) is the newest human insulin product by recombinant DNA technolgy. Like regular insulin, it lowers blood sugar, but much more rapidly. It starts acting 5 mins. after injection, peaks for 1 hour and lasts for 2-4 hours
What is Lantus Insulin?
Lantus insulin is a newer agent that is given subcutaneously and must not be mixed with other insulins. Onset is 1 hours, it has no peak and is lasts for 24 hours. This long duration makes it similar to normal insulin secretion.
What are Intermediate-Acting Insulins?
These being action in 1-3 hours, peak around 6-12 hours, and may last 24 hours. On the label, the letters N or L or the term isophane indicated that regular insulin has been modified, through the addition of zinc and protamine (protein) to delay absorption and prolong the time of action. N-Neutral pH; P=Protamine; H=Hagedorn, the lab that first prepared this type of insulin
What are Long acting insulins?
Like the intermediate-acting insulins these have been modified with the addition of zinc and protamine. They take 4-8 hours to act, peak in 12-20 hours and can continue acting as long as 36 hours. Ex: Humulin U or Ultralente
What are mixed insulins?
An order may require that you mix two insulins in one syringe and administer them together. Mixed insulins combine rapid and intermediate insulin. they save nursing time in preparation and are also more convenient for the patient, who must learn to draw up and sef-administer an injection. Ex: Humulin 70/30
What color is Regular insulin?
Regular insulin should appear clear and colorless; It is the only insulin that may be given IV.
Other insulins appear cloudy. Gently rotate cloudy insulin vials between your hands to resuspend the particles.
What are types of Insulin syringe?
100 units syringe and low-dose insulin syringe, measures does of 50 units or less
What is the mnemonic for mixing insulin?
Clear to Cloudy. Regular insulin is often ordered with NPH insulin. Since regular insulin is clear and NPH couldy-clear to cloudy may help in remembering wihich insulin to draw up first.
