What is nitrogen fixation? |
When Nitrogen gas in the atmosphere is converted to ammonia by bacteria called Rhizobium. The ammonia can then be used by plants |
Where is rhizobium found? |
Inside root nodules of leguminous plants. They form a mutualistic relationship with the plant (ie/ exchange of nitrogen for carbohydrates) |
What is ammonification? |
When nitrogen compounds from dead organisms are turned into ammonium compounds by decomposes. Animal waste also contains nitrogen compounds |
What is nitrification |
When ammonium compounds in the soil are changed into nitrogen compounds that can be used in plants |
What bacteria changes ammonium compounds into nitrates? |
Nitrosomonas |
What bacteria changes nitrites into nitrates? |
Nitrobacter |
What is denitrification? |
When nitrates in the soil converted into nitrogen gas by denitrifying bacteria |
What other ways can nitrogen enter the ecosystem? |
Lightning -fixes atmospheric nitrogen Artificial fertilisers |
