Bacteria |
Unicellular organisms that are classified as prokaryotes. Belong to the kingdom Monera. Can be classified according to their shape: Coccus, Spirillus, Bacillus. Can also be classified according to the way in wjich they obtain their energy: Photosynthetic bacteria get their energy from the sun. Chemosynthetic bacteria get their energy from inorganic chemicals. Heterotrophic bacteria get their energy by feeding on organic matter. Bacteria mainly reproduce asexually through binary fission in favourable conditions. |
|
Binary fission |
Mitosis used in bacteria to reproduce |
|
Chemosynthetic |
Using energy obtained from a chemical reaction to make food. |
|
Phagocytes |
White blood cells |
|
Protista |
Consists of 3 main groups: animal-like protists (protozoa), plant-like protists (algae), fungus-like protists (slime mould) Protists are all eukaryotes as they have a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Reproduce asexually through binary fission in favourable conditions. In unfavourable conditions sexual reproduction can occur. A resistant zygospore is formed. |
|
Zygospore |
A thick-walled, resistant spore formed from a zygote in fungi or algae. |
