Flexion

Is a typical hinge joints (bending the knee or elbow) but it is also common at ball and socket joint

Extension

Extension is the opposite of flexion, it a movement that increases the angle or distance between two bones or parts of the body ( straighten the knee and elbow)

Abduction

Abduction is moving limbs away ( generally on the frontal plane) from the midline or median plane of the body

Adduction

Adduction is the opposite of a abduction, so it is the movement of a limb toward the body midline

Adding a body part

Circumduction

A combination of flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction commonly seen in ball and socket joints, such as the shoulders

Pronation

Occurs when the forearm rotates medially so that palm faces posteriorly (or down)!

Supination

Occurs when the forearm rotates laterally so that the palm faces anteriorly or up and the radius and ulna or parallel as in anatomical position

Dorsiflexion

Lifting the food so that it’s superior surface approaches the shin ( pointing your toe toward your head)

Plantar flexion

Is pointing the toes away from your head

Inversion

To invert the foot, turn the sole medially

Eversion

To evert the foot turn the sole laterally.

Name the three structural types of joints found in the body and give example of each

Synarthroses/ Fibrous- immovable

Amphiarthroses/Synovial joints- are freely movable

Diarthroses/Cartilaginous joints- have both immovable and slightly movable

List the parts of common to all synovial

Articular cartilage

Articular capsule

Joint cavity

Reinforcing ligaments

List and describe the different types of synovial joints.

Plane joint- intercarapal and intertarsal joints

Hinge joint- elbow and interphalageal joint

Pivot joint ( proximal joint between the radius and the ulna

Condylar joint (knuckles)

Saddle joint- carpometacarpal joint of the thumb

Ball and socket joint (shoulder and hip joints)

Define the different angular and circular movement of the body

Plane joint- angular joint

Hinge joint- angular

Pivot joint- circular

Condylar- angular

Saddle joints- angular

Ball and socket- multiaxle
