What is the object of single line working?

When one line of a double line system is closed to normal traffic due to track repair or an obstruction, a system of train running termed single line working maybe introduced.

This will allow trains to run in either direction over what is normally a one directional track either the up or down line of a double line system.

The trains are operated by permission of a competent worker appointed as the pilot.

How is single line working established?

No train may enter the single line section without the permission of the pilot who acts under the instruction from the signaller at either end of the section.

The signals at each end of the single line must be kept at the stop position.

The pilot must wear a red badge with the word pilotman in white letters. If no badge is available a red flag may be used instead.

What information must the pilot give the driver prior to entering the single line?

The pilot will inform the driver of the exact location of where single line working is operational.

They must also show the driver the pilots form.

The pilot will authorise the driver to pass at the STOP position the fixed signal controlling the entrance to the single line section.

The pilot will inform the driver whether the train will be dispatched or accompanied by the pilot.

If more trains are to follow in the section, the pilot will dispatch the first trains and accompany the last train.

Any signals exiting the single line section is under the control of the signaller not the pilot.

What precautions are taken to protect the obstruction or point of repair?

At both ends of the line that is obstructed a red stop hand signal is placed at least 400 m from the point where single line working commences.

How must drivers operate the train over lines under single line working?

The driver must approach the station where single line working commences in a cautious manner prepared to stop at the outer home signal obey audible track warning signals and hand signals.

Which signals within the single line section must be operated?

When running in the non-signalled direction on the single line the following must be understood by the driver:

- where the double line block system is in used for fixed signals at intermediate signal boxes must be worked in both directions for trains using the single line-this means we refer to the ‘signals’ on our correct line even if we are on the ‘wrong’ line

- where ABS is in use, fixed signals on the obstructed line do not apply to trains using the single line

- The driver running the train must obey the aspect of automatic signals applicable to the track being used for single line working

What are the drivers duties when operating on the single line section during darkness or inclement weather?

During darkness, inclement weather or when passing through tunnels, trains operating on the single line must carry red marker lights or use hazard lights on the front of the train.

What are the drivers duties when operating on the single line section during daylight?

All trains must run CAUTIOUSLY at reduced speed and the driver must make frequent use of the whistle.

What is the maximum speed permitted over facing points when operating in the wrong direction?

Speed of trains when passing over facing points which are trailing points normally must not exceed 15 km an hour.
