Body Cells

46 Chromosomes (23 types, in pairs) in their nuclei

Cells with pairs of chromosomes are diploid (2N)

Sex Cells

Have only 23 Chromosomes (1 of each type, not paired) on their nuclei are haploid ("N')

Fertilization

Haploid (N) sperm and a haploid (N) egg combine to form a diploid (2N) zygote

restoring the chromosome number to 46 (23 types, in pair)

Mitosis

Duplication Division in which a cell makes an exact copy of itself, 46 chromosome are reproduced

Used for growth and repair of tissue by body cells(NOT sex cells)

Meiosis

Reduction Division in which a cell reproduces itself but halves its number of chromosomes (Dow to one of each pair)

Cells are not exact copies of the parents cell, genetically different

Used to from the sex cells- eggs and sperm

Scrotum

Sacs that hold the testes

Helps regulate testicular temperature

Testes

Paired organs that produce spam and male sex hormones

Composed of seminiferous tubules where sperm and produced and interstitial cells which produce sex hormone

Epididymis

Near testes, sperm mature and stored here

Sperm Anatomy : Head

Covered by an acrosome cap which stores enzymes needed to penetrate eggs

Sperm Anatomy : Middle area

Contains mitochondria to make ATP need to move tail

Sperm Anatomy : Tail

Flagella provides movement
