Oral tradition
|
Professional storytellers memorized stories and passed these on by word of mouth. Stories focused on Israel's history, laws and beliefs. Began around 1850 BCE and continued throughout the formation of the Bible.

Written tradition
|
The oral traditions were put in writing to preserve their history, beliefs and identity. The earliest writings took place around 1000 BCE. Much of the OT was written around 500 BCE (Exile).

Edited tradition
|
The stories that best reflect the Hebrew beliefs were gathered, put in a chronological order and preserved. Around 150 BCE there were 46 books that captured the faith of the Hebrew people.
