Palmar Grasp Reflex

-place examiner's finger in infant's palm

-finger flexion; reflexive grasp

-interferes with releasing object

Asymmeric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR)

-Fully rotate infant's head and hold for 5 seconds

-extension of extremities on the face side

-flexion of extremities on the skull side

-interferes with reaching and grasping, bilateral hand use, and rolling

Neck on Body (NOB)

- place infant in supine and fully turn head to one side

- log rolling of the entire body to maintain alignment with the head

-maintains head/body alignment; initiates rolling

Body Righting Reaction on Body (BOB)

-place infant in supine, flex on hip and knee toward the chest and hold briefly

-segmental rolling of he upper trunk to maintain alignment

-facilitates trunk/spinal rotation

Optical Righting Reaction

-pull infant from laying position upward

-upright positioning of the head should occur

-orients head in space ; maintains face vertical

Landau Reaction

-hold infant in horizontal prone suspension

-complete extension of head, trunk, and extremities

-slows development of prone extension, sitting, and standing

-early onset may indicate excessive tone or spasticity

-breaks up flexor dominance

Protective Extension Reaction Forward

-suddenly tip infant forward toward supporting surface while vertically suspended

-sudden extension of the upper extremities, hand opening, and neck extension

-interferes with head protection when center of gravity is displaced

-allows accurate placement of upper extremities in anticipation of supporting surface to prevent a fall

Protective Extension Reflex Sideways

-quickly but firmly tip infant off balance to the side while in the sitting position

-arm extension and abduction to the side

-protects body to prevent a fall

-supports body for unilateral use of opposite arm

-interferes with head protection when center of gravity is displaced

Protective Extension Reaction Backward

-quickly but firmly tip infant off balance backward from sitting position

-backward arm extension or arm extension to one side spinal rotation

-protects body to prevent fall

-unilaterally facilitates

-interferes with head protection when center of gravity is displaced

Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR)

-place infant in supine --> increases extensor tone (fetal position; physiological flexion)

-place infant in prone --> increases flexor tone

-facilitates total body flexor or extensor tone depending on positioning

-interferes with turning on side, rolling over, going from lying to sitting position, and crawling

-interferes with ability to hold in supine flexion or assume a pivot prone position in older children
