Step 1

Wash hands, put on clean procedure gloves.

Place a bedpan or urinal in the appropriate position as indicated.

Removes the bedpan or urinal, being careful not to spill the urine. Reposition patient and transport the urine to the bathroom.

While wearing clean gloves, pours the urine into a graduated cylinder or calibrated measuring container, labeled with the correct parient information (in many institutions, labels are preprinted or bar-coded)

Places the measuring device on a flat surface (like a table or shelf) and reads the amount at eye level

Step 6
|
Discards the urine in the toiler. If a specimen is required, transfers at least 30 mL of urine to the designated container.

Record time and volume on the I&O sheeet, and record observations or urine color, clarity, and odor.

Step 8
|
Cleans the measuring container and stores in patient's bathroom.

Step 9
|
Removes gloves and washes hands.
