What are the different types of packaging materials? |
Cans, Glass Containers, Rigid Plastic Containers, Flexible Plastic containers, Paper and board containers, Aluminium foil and laminates, Styrofoam. |
What are the advantages of the can? |
-Provides good protection for the contents and prevents undesirable gains or loss in moisture content. -Easy to handle -Stored for long periods of time -Standard shapes and sizes for stacking -Cheap |
What two different types of metals are used for cans? |
Steel and Aluminium |
What are steel cans used for? |
Solid and semi solid foods |
What are aluminium cans used for? |
Liquids such as soft drink or beer |
Why is a coating needed for steel cans? |
To ensure that the food inside doesn't react with the packaging (inert). |
What are the advantages of a glass container? |
-Inert -Impermeable and non porous -Transparent -Generally strong -Easy to re-seal and open -Variety of shapes and sizes -Re-usable |
What are the advantages of paper and board? |
-Versatile and cost effective -Laminate-able
What does lamination do? |
-Produces strength -Increases moisture resistance |
What are the advantages of Rigid plastic packaging? |
-Lightweight yet strong -High resistance to breakage -Variety of shapes sizes and colours -Relatively cheap |
What are the most common rigid plastics used in food packaging? |
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high density polyethylene (HDPE). |
What kind of plastic would be used for hot fill products? |
polypropylene (PP) |
What plastics are used for films and bags? |
PET for cling wrap HDPE for shopping bags and cereal liners LDPE for shrink wraps PP for snack foods |
How are plastics made into packaging? |
The raw materials are melted and extruded into a desired shape |
What is a composite plastic? |
Where two different plastics are co-extruded and bonded together to create a new plastic |
What is a lamination? |
Involves combining two or more materials from separate reels using adhesive or heat. Most plastic packaging is a lamination. |
Why are foils used in lamination? |
Foils are light, flexible and strong (Depending on thickness) and able to withstand changes in heat. |
What is a composite package? |
When two or more materials are laminated together. Eg a milk carton is plastic, paper and foil |
What is primary packaging? |
The package in which the food is sold to the consumer. |
What is secondary packaging? |
A second layer of packaging used to hold multiple primary packages together. Eg a plastic wrap holding juice boxes together |
What is tertiary packaging? |
Tertiary packaging is used to secure multiple secondary packages together for ease of bulk handling |
