Scrimmage Kick: K cannot touch beyond ENZ before touched by R (before it comes to rest).

* Backward Pass (includes snap), illegal kick, or fumble by A from in or behind the NZ prior to COP

Free Blocking Zone size, and who is in it?

Rectangle 4 yards either side spot of snap, and 3 yards behind each LOS.

Player is in FBZ if any part of body is in the zone at the snap.

2-17.1

What blocking exceptions does A have in FBZ?

Offensive linemen in FBZ at snap can BBW or Clip defense players who were on the LOS , and can also BIB against any other defensive players in the FBZ .

What blocking exceptions does B have in FBZ?

Defensive players on the LOS and in FBZ at snap can BBW on offensive linemen , and nothing else .

Makes sense, as the BBW takes place in normal, quick line play. Defense cannot BBW on non-linemen (so can't cut a back coming through to block), and cannot BIB or clip at all.

Kick - definition

A kick is the intentional striking of the ball with the knee, lower leg or foot. 2-24.1

When does a kick end?

A kick ends when a player gains possession or when the ball becomes dead while not in player possession. 2-24.2

A muff is the touching of a loose ball by a player in an unsuccessful attempt to secure possession. 2-27

Pass: forward or backward?

Forward if it's initial direction is toward opponent's goal line.

So pass is backward if initial direction is parallel to or toward the runner's goal line. 2-31.2, 2-31.5

When is a pass beyond the neutral zone?

A pass has gone beyond the NZ if at any time during the pass, the entire ball is beyond the NZ. 2-31.3
