Rectus Abdominis

Right and Left side

most powerful spinal flexor

Tendirous inscriptions

another name for the lines that create a six pack

External oblique overview

Most superficial

runs diagonally from lower 8 rids to linea alba to pelvis

thin flat covering of abs

Rectus Abdominus action

spinal flexion

external oblique action

Lateral flexion and rotation

Internal oblique

connects from ribs 9-12 at 90 degree angle

Transverse abdominus

also know as the corset muscle

deepest

Helps with posture and stabilization

Aids in breathing

Linea Alba

The line or crease that runs down the middle of your abs and serves as a connector.

Erector Spine

Starts as one muscle in the lower back

Then splits into three:

1. Spinalis (medial) thoracic spine

2. Longissimus (intermideate) thoracic cervial border

3. Iliocostalis (lateral) top 4 ribs

main stabilizer of spine

What makes up the Transbersospinalis Group

Semispinalis

Multifidus

Rotatores

Semispinalis action and placement

Spinal extension

only in thoracic and cervical spine

Multifidus action and placement

spine extension/stablization

lumbar spine

Rottores

Connects vertebrae to ribs

stabilization

What is the deep spinal group and what is it made of

individual muscles that connect vertebrae together

Interspinalis

intertransversales

Quadratus Lumborum

Intertransversales

connects transverse process

stabilization

Interspinalis

connects spinous process, straight down back

Quadratus Lumborum

Flat muscle in lumbar

Thoracic Kyphosis

Hunching of the back

Cervical Lordosis

forward neck

Lumbar Lordosis

Sway Back

Causes:

-tight sacrum

-forced turnout

Scoliosis

Can be structural or non structural ( non can be fixed without surgery)

types of curve:

-S curve (more serious)

-C curve

Herniated disk

Cause -as you get older the water content of disk lessens and can not absorb as much shock. then pushes part of disk out of vertebrae

Symptoms: -pain or numbness in back and back of thigh,

Treatment: -if disk has completely deteriorated then they will replace it -most cases will heal themselves

Sciatica

pain caused by pressure on sciatic nerve

Cause: -tightness in legs or butt usually on your right or dominate side

Trapezius

-connects down the length of spine

Upper:

-fibers are down and lateral

-upward rotation, sapular elevation, adduction

Middle: -sacpular adduction

Lower: -sacpular depression -upward rotation -adduciton

Levator Scapulae

-small, lyes under the upper trapezius

-upward rotation

Rhomboids

-Runs under traps

-minor above major small and weaker

-connects inner edge of scapula to spine

-scapular elevation, adduction, downward rotation

Serratus Major

-from ribs 1-8, to under scapula to medial edge

-attaches back to front of thorax

-upward rotation, lower fibers aid scapular depression, scapular adduction

Pectoralis Minor

-goes to front of ribs, under the pec major,

-abduction, downward rotation and depression

Rotator Cuff

-made of 4 muscles (Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, Subscapularis)

-helps humerus stay in place

-forms hood around head of humerus

-stabilize humerus head

Pectoralis Major

-starts at inner clavicle, sternum, costal cartilage of upper 6 ribs

-attaches at humerus

-front of armpit is the attachment of pec major to humerus

-Shoulder adduction, internal rotation (pushing, throwing and punching)

Deltoid

-attaches to clavicle and wraps around shoulder to middle of humerus

Anterior: -shoulder flexion -adduction -internal rotation

Middle: -abduction

Posterior -extension -abduction -external rotation

Coracobrachialis

-beneath pec major

-shoulder flexion and adduction

Latissimus Dorsi (Lats)

-broadest muscle of back.

-attaches to humerus via flat tenon that makes back of armpit

-adduction, shoulder extension, internal rotation

Teres Major

-runs across top part of lats and assists with its movement

Biceps

superficial,

two heads (short and long),

flexion

Supinator

raidoulnar supination

attaches radius to ulna

Brachialis

under bicep,

elbow flexion

Brachioradialis

elbow flexion

returns arm to natural position

Pronator Teres

Radioulnar pronator

Elbow flexion

Pronator Quadratus

pulls radius over ulna

Triceps

3 heads

- long

- lateral (upper front part of humerus)

- Medial (under and back of humerus)

Elbow extension

Anconeus

Elbow extension

Tennis Elbow

Tendonitis of the elbow caused by over use. Brace and rest will help, in the worst scenario surgery is needed.

Carpal Tunnel

numbness of fingers due to over use and weakness

the median nerve become inflamed and puts pressure on nerve in carpal tunnel
