Refraction

The bending of light.

Apex

The thinnest point at which the two nonparallel surfaces of a prism meet.

Base

The widest portion of a prism, opposite of the Apex.

Corpuscular theory

Light traveling in minute bursts of energy particles called photons.

Prism

Triangular shaped piece of glass or plastic which deviates light toward the base.

Biconvex

An outward curved surface on both front and back sides.

Chromatic aberration

When white light is broken into its spectral component colors.

Astigmatism

When light has more than one focal point and must be corrected by a lens having two different powers.

Focal length

The distance rays of light converge after passing through an optical lens.

Wave theory

Light traveling in waves.

Wave length

The distance from the crest of one wave to the crest of the next.

Emergent ray

Light that exits the lens.

Optical center

The point on an ophthalmic presription lens through which no prismatic effect is manifested.

Incident ray

Light that enters the lens.

Normal

An imaginary line which represents optical center on a lens.

Reflection

The bouncing off of light by a lens surface.

Refractive index

The ratio of speed of light in air compared to the speed of light in a medium.

Sphere

A lens having a single refractive power in all meridians.

Spherocylinder

The combination of sphere and cylinder powers into a single lens.

Toric

A surface having two separate curves at right angles to one another.
