Discuss at least three (3) of the things we have learned from the history of educational technology that can help us shape today's uses.
We learned that even though new technology comes out, that does not mean that it is better than the old ones.
We also learned that teachers do not develop the software. We are consumers of the products.
And the last of the three is that we learned that even with technology, teachers are still a vital part of the educational system.
Discuss three of the issues you feel are most important in shaping the role of technology in education. Tell why they are the most important ones
Three issues I feel are most important are knowing about the technology, how to manipulate the technology, and how to integrate it into the classroom. All of these things are important because unless you know about the technology, you will not know how to use it and without knowing how to use the technology, you wont know how to apply what you know in the classroom for your children. Technology has become one of the most necessities of our world today. In order to run a class properly or be able to teach and keep the attention span of the children, we must know all three of these things.
Suppose Vygotsky and Skinner were having a conversation about effective learning strategies. What areas of agreement would they have? What areas of disagreement would they have?
Agreement: Perhaps they would agree that learners acquire skills at different rates. Disagreement: Whether or not individual differences in background experiences play a critical role in learning.
Suppose there is a student who has failed at learning mathematics skills and is very unmotivated. What strategy would advocates of directed instruction suggest? What would constructivist recommend?
Directed: Try to identify gaps in prerequisite skills and target specific remedial instruction delivered at the student's own pace.
Constructivist: Engage the student in more visually interesting tasks linked to topics that he can relate to from his own experience, let him build knowledge based on these experiences.
Some people say drill and practice is really "drill and kill." What can teachers do to make sure this kind of use doesn't happen and drill and practice can serve a useful function?
Teach thoroughly first, then allow practice. Prevent frustration by limiting practice time and placing students at the right level for their ability
What factors should a teacher consider essential features to look for before buying a courseware package?
The teacher would need to make sure that the software was about the same curriculum, make sure that the students will benefit from it and that's it's not just a game, and the teacher must be able use one of the functions in their classroom.
What are some good reasons for choosing software productivity tools over non-software tools?
Improved productivity, appearance, more support for classroom interaction among students and teachers
Summarize research findings about how word processing affects students' writing ability.
Word processing can improve writing and attitudes toward writing only if it used in the context of good writing instruction and if students have enough time to learn word processing procedures before grading begins.
