What was the Schuman Plan 1950?

Devised by the French - supranational higher authority to control coal and steel industries of Germany.

Why did Britain not join talks on the Schuman Plan?

They had differences over national sovereignty and fears of supranationalism.

What was the Treaty of Paris 1951?

Set up the ECSC. Which was based on the Schuman Plan and was intended to bring about France-German rapprochement and boost economic growth.

The ECSC succeeded, how did it benefit its members?

The largely agricultural economies of France, Italy and Holland were balanced by an industrial power, Germany, not Britain. This made a successful customs union.

-Six signed treaty in Paris, in May 1952 to set up EDC, Eden signed 50 year mutual security treaty with new organisation.


-Proposed to increase institutional ties between supranational communities of the Six and the Council of Europe.

How did the EDC fail?

EDC still need to be ratified but French changed minds and voted against it.

What did the WEU stand for?

What was the WEU 1955?

Proposed by Eden to extend Brussels Pact of 1948 to West Germany and Italy. Became WEU in 1955.


-West German rearmament under NATO supervision with West Germany joining as sovereign state.
