Philosophers

Philosophy comes from the Greek word "love of wisdom." Philosophy led the study of history, political science, science, and mathematics. Many philosophers were teachers.

Sophists
|
Sophists were teachers that traveled to make a living. They believed that what was right for one was wrong for the other, and that gods were not influencial on life.

Socrates
|
Socrates was a critic of the Sophists. Socrates believed that an absolute truth existed and that all real knowledge was within eveyone. Socrates invented the Socratic method of teaching, which is still used today. Some Athenian leaders considered the Socratic method a threat to their power. Socrates was sentenced to death. Socrates, however, didn't leave any writings behind.

Plato
|
Plato was one of Socrates students. Plato's main idea was his ideas about government. He felt that a democracy was not the right way to run a country. He decided that the right way was a republic. In the republic, their were three groups of people. The first group of people were philosopher-kings. Second were warriors, then were the people. Plato believed that men and women should have equal rights.

Aristotle
|
Aristotle was Plato's best student. His main idea was the "golden mean." This idea meant that people should do nothing in access. For example, one should not eat too much or too little, just enough to do well. He also realized that Government run by a few people were usually run by the rich, and government run by many people were run by the poor. He decided that the best government was a mixture of the two.
