Qur'an |

Sunnis and Shi'is |
Two different sects of Islam. Have the same core beliefs about the prophet, but vary on other points. Sunnis believe in the caliph as a political leader. Shi'is believe in the Imam as a political and religious leader who should also be a descendant of the prophet. |

Sufis |
Mystics. A Sufi can be a Sunni or Shi'i. They emphasize spirituality, purification of the heart and God. Considered to be more lenient. |

Secularism |
Separation of state from religion. |

Demography |
Composition of a human population (based on race, religion, etc.) |

Hijab |
In the Qur'an, literally means curtain, separation of heaven/hell, cover of the heart, or shield from divine light. In modern context, refers to a range of coverings for women. Hijab can refer to a head covering or to a full-body covering, including the eyes. |

Sartorial |
Relating to clothes or style of dress. |

Polygamy |
Practice of having more than one wife or husband at one time. |

Seclusion |
State of private or sheltered from others. |

Gender |
The concept of sexes such as male and female, but with social context or meaning attached. |
