what is meant by the term serial dilution |
To make something less concentrated in a series of steps |
what is the formula for calculating a dilution |
Dilution equals amount transferred over amount transferred + amount of the diluent |
what is meant by the term dilution |
To make something less concentrated |
What is plate count assay? |
Allows us to grow samples from our dilution tubes , incubate them and look for colony forming units |
Why is plate count assay necessary |
For us to be able to determine concentration of organisms in our culture |
What is a colony forming unit? |
Represents where a viable cell was able to grow into a colony |
How do you calculate the number of cfu/ml of original culture by using the serial dilution and plate count technique |
Multiply # of colonies on plate by the dilution factor for the plate count plate that has btwn 30 and 300 colonies. Less than 30 too few to count, greater than 300, too numerous to count. Have to have the count in scientific notation |
What is the formula for the dilution factor? |
Reciprocal of dilution. 1/dilution |
