What are the two stages of digestion? |
1. Physical breakdown 2. Chemical digestion |
|
What is physical breakdown? |
If food is too large to digest it must be broken down into smaller pieces. This can be done by the teeth, for example, or the muscles in the stomach wall can churn. This makes it possible to ingest. |
|
What is chemical digestion? |
Breaks down large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble ones. Carried out by enzymes. |
|
Name three different types of digestive enzymes. |
Carbohydrases break down carbohydrates to monosaccharides. Lipases break down lipids into glycerol and fatty acids. Proteases break down proteins into amino acids. |
|
What is hydrolysis? |
The splitting up of molecules by adding water to the chemical bonds that hold them together. |
