What is done to the patient just prior to ET Intubation?
The patient is hyperoxygenated and hyperventilated with 100% oxygen using a bag-valve mask.
What is the average size ETT for females?
7.5 - 8.0 mm
What is the average size ETT for males?
8.0 - 9.0 mm
What is the maximum time it should take to intubate someone before needing to mechanically ventilate them?
no longer than 30 seconds.
How is correct placement of the ETT verified?
Primary confirmation is done by assessing for bilateral chest rise/fall with each ventilation, and by 5 point auscultation of the chest and abdomen (L and R anterior chest, L and R midaxillary, and the epigastrium.
What is used as secondary confirmation that the ETT is in the trachea and not the esophagus?
A bulb aspiration device is compressed and deflated and then is attached to the ETT. If the tube is in the trachea, the bulb inflates rapidly. If the tube is in the esophagus, the bulb inflation is delayed.
