What are the three main functions of the skeleton |
Support Movement Protect |
How does the skeleton allow movement |
The bones meet at joints which act like levers and the tendons attach bone to muscle allowing complex and simple movement |
How doe the skeleton system provide support |
The skeleton provides support in the body to do many moves such as sitting, standing etc. The skeleton gives the body shape. The skeletal system and the bones act like the framework |
How does the skeletal system provide protection |
It provides protection by protecting the vital organs. e.g. The cranium protects the brain. The rib cage protects the lungs and heart The vertebral column protects the spine |
What is a joint |
A place where two bones meet |
What is elastic and protects the bones at the end of a joint |
Cartilage |
What are the two joints called |
Hinge joint and Ball and socket joint |
Where is the hinge joint located |
The elbow joint and the knee joint |
What does the hinge joint enable |
It enables the flexion (bending) and the extension (straightening) of the elbow and knee |
Where is the ball and socket joint located |
In the shoulder joint and the hip joint (Tip* only talk about the shoulder) |
What does the ball and socket joint enable |
It allows the arm to Flex, Extend, Abduct, Adduct and Rotate |
When does flexion and extension occur |
When you increase the angle at a joint is when flexion occurs When you decrease the angle at a joint is when extension occurs (Tip* use this to talk mainly about the hinge joints and if you can the ball and socket joint) |
When does abduction, adduction and rotation occur |
When the movement is taking away from the body then abduction is occurring. When the movement is adding back to the body the adduction is occurring When the movement is around the body then rotation is occurring (Tip* Use this to talk about the shoulder joint) |
What makes the bones strong |
Regular physical activity and exercise |
What do bones do until the age of 18 |
The grow and become stronger until this age |
What is bone density and how do you increase it |
Bone density is the heaviness of the bone and it increases through regular exercise, allowing them to become stronger |
How do you increase joint flexibility and power |
When the ligaments and tendons become stronger it can increase joint flexibility and power |
What is osteoporosis |
This is when your bones are very weak and can break easier. |
How do you delay/prevent osteoporosis from occurring |
You do lots of weight bearing exercise like walking, running, tennis and aerobics. As it places pressure on certain bones |
