it works like biological immunisations with small 'doses' of the stressor to make the patient resistant to it

3 phases:
- discussion of patient's problems and the way t deals with stressors - teaching the patient skills to replace self-defeating statements with positive statements and e.g. relaxation excercises - practicing these skills e.g. in role plays until the patient is able to deal with real-life-stressors |
