Classification
Process of grouping similar things together
Kingdom
A major, large group of similar organisms.
Species
A single kind of organism that can reproduce among its own kind |
What are the two parts of the classification system that make-up an animal's scientific name?
Genus and Species (note that the first letter of every species name is NEVER capitalized).
Vertebrates
An animal with a backbone |
Invertebrates |
An animal without a backbone
Nonvascular Plant
A plant without transport tubes; water and nutrients are rather absorbed from their surroundings. The water inside the plant then carries the food and nutrients from cell to cell. Example: moss
Vascular Plant
A plant with transport tubes. Example: trees, cacti, and duckweed |
Angiosperm
A flowering plant, which has seeds that are surrounded or protected by fruit. Example: Apple tree |
Gymnosperm
A vascular plant whose seeds are not surrounded by fruit. A seed bearing plant. Example: pine tree that bears seeds inside of pine cones
Phloem
A vascular tissue that carries food from the leaves to the other parts of a plant |
Xylem
A vascular tissue that carries water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant |
What are two types of vascular tissue?
Xylem and Phloem
Every living thing fits into one of the five kingdoms, what are they?
Animal, Plants, Protists, Fungi, and Bacteria
Organisms of the Animal Kingdom
Fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds.
Organisms are classified into smaller and smaller groups, name the groups from kingdom to species.
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species |
Why do scientists classify living things?
Scientists classify livings things to make them easier to study and understand their behaviors.
What are characteristics of monera (bacteria)?
Some use photosynthesis, while others respire. Typically single-celled organisms with no nuclear membrane.
What are characteristics of fungi?
Non-green organisms that reproduce with spores. Do not make their own food, but rather eat off its host as parasites or decompose matter and take it in as their food. Example: mushrooms, mold, mildew, and yeast. |
What are characteristics of protist?
Single-celled or multi-celled organisms that have a nucleus. Not an animal, plant, or fungi. |
What are characteristics of animals? |
Organisms that are invertebrate or vertebrate. Multicellular, with no cell walls, and obtain energy through respiration.
What are characteristics of plants?
Multi-celled organisms, that have a cell wall. Obtains energy through photosynthesis. |
