In Newton's thinking, what was the direction of force on a planet?
From the law of inertia, he knew this force was not directed along the path of the planets as Kepler had speculated but was, instead, in the direction in which the planets are curved toward the sun.
In Newton's insight, what did a falling apple have in common with the moon?
What sort of force could act from one place to another without contact? NEwton was aware of such a force. When an apple falls to the ground, it is accelerated from its position on the tree. He wondered if the same force extended to the moon, holding the moon in an elliptical path around the earth, a path similar to a planet's path around the sun. so teh same force to hold the apple holds the moon
How can the moon "fall" without getting closer to the earth?
the moon falls in the sense that it falls away from the straight lie it would follow if there were no forces acting on it. its tangential speed falls around the earth.
How does the force of gravity between two objects depend on their masses?
according to newton, every body attracts every other body with a force that for any two bodies is directly proportional to the product of the masses of the bodies involved and inversely proportional to the square of the distance separating them. this statement can be expressed as F ~m1m2/d^2
How does the force of gravity depend on the distance between two objects?
The greater the distance of separation d, the weaker the force of attraction- in inverse proportion to the square of the distance between their centers of mass.
Would the springs inside a bathroom scale be more compressed or less compressed if you weighed yourself in an elevator that accelerated upward? Downward?
If you stood on a bathroom scale in a moving elevator, you'd find variations in your weight. If the elevator accelerated upward, the springs inside the bathroom scale would be more compressed and your weigh reading would increase. If the elevator accelerated downward ,the springs inside the scael would be less compressed and your weight reading would decrease.
What is a gravitational field, and how can its presence be detected?
A gravitational field is an example of a force field, for a body with any mass in the field space experiences a force. Another force field, perhaps more familiar is a magnetic field.
