Altered State of Consciousness
Awareness of oneself and one's environment that is noticeably different from the normal state of consciousness
Hypnosis
A physiological state of altered attention and awareness in which a person is usually receptive to suggestions.
Hypnotizability
Degree to which a person can enter a dep hypnotic state
Neodissociation Theory of Hypnosis
Theory that hypnotized persons enter an altered state in which 2 streams of consciousness operate simultaneously, one actively responding to suggestions and the other passively observing what is going on
Meditation
Variety of mental exercises that alter the normal flow of consciousness in order to enhance self knowledge
Near-death experiance
An altered state of consciousness in which a person is either briefly clinically dead of in extreme danger of clinical death.

Psychoactive drugs that speed up or stimulate the nervous system and increase mental and physical activity
Stimulant induced psychosis
Schizophrenic like symptoms that occur following prolonged and excessive use of cocaine and amphetamins
Hallucinogens
Psychoactive drugs that distort perception and generate sensory images without any external stimulation
LSD
synthesized chemical that is most potent of hallucinogens; induces hallucinations, distortions, and a blending of sensory experiances

Sleep disorder in which a person repeatedly stops breathing during sleep
Insomnia
Common sleep disorder characterized by chronic inability to fall or stay asleep.
Night Terrors
