Ectothermic
In animals, having a body temperature that is determined by the temperature of the surrounding environment.
Endothermic
In animals, having a relatively constant body temperature that is usually higher than the temperature of the surrounding environment.
Heterothermic
An endotherm which can stay warmer than the medium in which they live. They can function as endotherms, generating metabolic heat in order to increase body temperature. They sometimes generate and retain heat, but most times do not.
Hibernation
A state of reduced metabolism and controlled lowering of body temperature. Reduces the amount of energy required at a time where little food is available.
