Interphase
period between one cell division and the next one
Mitosis
A nuclear division in which the chromosome number remains the same
DNA Polymerase
Breaks hydrogen bonds holding one base pair to another
Semi Conservative Replication
Allows you to conserve one of the two strands of DNA. Proposed in 1951 by Walter and Crick.
Centromere
Ties or holds together the two strands of DNA
Prophase
The first stage of mitosis where the condensation or compaction of chromosomes is the main event.
Metaphase
The second stage of mitosis where the chromosomes are lined up in the center of the spindle.
Metaphase Plate
Imaginary line in the middle of the mitotic spindle.
Anaphase
The third phase of mitosis that involves the movement of chromosomes towards each of the two poles. Ends when the chromosomes reach the poles.
Telophase
The fourth phase of mitosis. The nuclear envelope begins to reform and the mitotic spindle disappears. The cleavage furrow also forms.
Cleavage Furrow
Pinching in or constriction in the middle of the cell.
Diploid Chromosome Number
Two copies of each chromosome present. Production of sperm and egg begin with this type of cell
Haploid Number of Chromosomes
One copy of each chromosome is present.
Meiosis
The nuclear division that reduces chromosome number by one half.
Prophase 1
Stage in meiosis where mitotic spindles form and the nuclear envelope disppears
Synapsis
The pairing up of homologous chromosomes during Prophase 1 of meiosis
Metaphase 1
Stage in meiosis that aligns pairs of chromosomes but not individual chromosomes
Anaphase 1
Stage in meiosis where chromosomes move toward the poles
Telophase 1
Stage in meiosis where the chromosome number is 1/2 of what it started with and the chromosomes begin to reextend
Prophase 2
Stage in meiosis where the same events of Prophase 1 occur but with half the number of chromosomes
Metaphase 2
Stage in meiosis 2 where chromosomes align on the metaphase plate
Anaphase 2
Stage in meiosis 2 that begins with the splitting of centromeres
Telophase 2
Stage in meiosis 2 that begins when the chromosomes reach the poles.
DNA synthesis is a(n)......... process
enzyme catalyzed
Cytokenisis in plant cells results in the formation of what structure?
Cell Wall
