Arteries carry oxygenated blood (apart from the pulmonary artery which carries deoxygenated blood) away from the heart. Structure; Outer layer; Collagen Layer Middle layer; thick layer made from muscle and elastin. Inner layer; endothelium, which is 1 cell thick. Have thick walls to withstand high pressure from the blood, lumen is relatively small in comparison to wall thickness. |
