What is diffusion? |
The passive movement of a solute from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. This movement is driven by a concentration gradient. |
|
What is Osmosis? |
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Water will always move in the direction where there is a high concentration of solute (hence a lower concentration of water) |
|
When molecules are even throughout a space what is this called? |
Equilibrium |
|
What is a concentration gradient? |
A difference between concentrations in a space, molecules will always move down the concentration gradient to areas of lesser concentration |
|
What is a simple rule to remember? |
Salt Sucks.
Water will always move in the direction of a solute (salt) |
|
Why do people shrivel in the ocean? |
The water in their bodies has undergone the process of Osmosis and moved where there is a greater concentration of solute (salt). In the ocean it is salt water, which explains the loss of water in the body. |
|
Where will the water move in this situation; There is 10% solute inside the cell and 20% outside. |
The water will move outside the cell. |
|
There is a higher concentration of molecules inside my cell, in comparison to the amount of molecules on the outside. Where would the molecules go? What process is this? |
The molecules would move along the concentration gradient to the outside of the cell, this is known as diffusion. |
