Assumptions
behaviour is innate. Strongly influenced by our genetic makeup. CNS plays a vital role, chemical processes are responsible for psychological functioning. The brain and the mind are the same. Humans have evolved.
The Genetic basis of behaviour
Each person has 23 pairs of chromosomes, each pair contains many pairs of genes. In a pair one gene comes from the mother the other the father.
Geneotype
the actual genetic make-up
Phenotype
the expression of a persons genetic makeup.
Genes types
Dominant and recessive.
Dominant
control the expression of physical and behaviour characteristics.
Recessive
do not influence the expression of characteristics unless both genes are recessive.
Phenylketonuria (PKU)
rare genetic disorder, results from a double recessive gene and causes sever learning difficulties. Children with PKU are unable to metabolise an amine called phenylalanine. If not diagnosed at birth the build up of the amine causes brain damage.
