What does a chloroplast do?
Traps sunlight for photosynthesis
What does the stomata do?
Allows gases to diffuse in and out of the leaves
What do the guard cells do?
Control the opening and closing of the stomata
What are palisade cells?
Cells in the leaf that contain lots of chloroplasts for photosynthesis
What is osmosis?
Movement of water from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration across a partially permeable membrane
What does turgid mean?
Cell has lots of water and the vacuole pushes out against cell wall
What does flaccid mean?
Cell has limited water so the plant wilts
What does plasmolysed mean?
Serious lack of water so the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from the plant
What is photosynthesis?
The process where plants make glucose using sunlight
What does the root hair cell do?
Increases the surface area of the root to make it absorb water and minerals faster
What affects the rate of transpiration?
Light, temperature, humidity and wind
What are roots used for?
Taking in water and minerals
What are the leaves used for?
Taking in sunlight for photosynthesis
What is transported in the phloem tubes?
Food
What is transported in the xylem tubes?
Water
What minerals are needed for healthy growth?
Nitrates, Phosphates and potassium
What is a fertiliser used for?
Adding nitrates, phosphates and potassium to the soil
What does a pyramid of numbers show?
How many of each organism is in the food chain.
What does a pyramid of biomass show?
How much living material is at each stage of the food chain.
What is intensive farming?
Growing the most food possible in an area using chemicals
What is organic farming?
Growing food without using chemicals
What is biological control?
Using natural predators to eat pests
What do insecticides do?
Kill insects
What do herbicides do?
Kill weeds
What do fungicides do?
Kill fungi
What conditions speed up decay?
Warmth, lots of oxygen, moist, lots of bacteria
What makes things decay?
Bacteria
How can we prevent decay?
Canning; cooling; freezing; adding salt; adding vinegar
What processes make carbon dioxide?
Burning, respiration, decay
What process removes carbon dioxide from the air?
Photosynthesis
