The catalyst of of this war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (of Austria-Hungary) in Bosnia by a Serbian.

No Mans Land

The area of land that existed between the trenches. Men had to go 'over the top' to infiltrate the enemies trenches

Reasons why Trenches were effecticve

They were zig zaged (you can't be shot at easily), protection from the elements and protection from gun fire happening in 'no mans land'

Conditions in the trenches

They were dirty, muddy, cramped and hot/cold. They did not protect soldiers from gas bombs and grenades

Soldiers experiences in the trenches included

Foot rot, disease, diarrhoea, infection, poison, starvation and sleep deprivation. They were also smelly from the bodies of their dead comrades
