What are the two major divisions of the nervous system? Explain each

CNS (central nervous system)

- brain and spinal cord (98% of nervous tissue)

- processes, integrates, stores & responds to information from the PNS.

PNS (peripheral nervous system)

- 2% of nervous tissue.

- sensory receptors, nerves, ganglia & plexuses.

- detects stimuli & transmits information to & receives information from the CNS.

What are the two subdivisions of the PNS? Explain each

The sensory division- transmits action potentials to the CNS & usually consists of single neurons that have their cell bodies in ganglia.

- responsible for AFFERENT (to the brain) signals to the CNS.

The motor division- carries action potentials away from the CNS in cranial or spinal nerves.

- responsible for EFFERENT (to the body) signals from the CNS.

What are the 2 subdivisions of the motor division? Explain each

The somatic nervous system: innervates skeletal muscle & is mostly under voluntary control. Single neurons that have their cell bodies located within the CNS.

The autonomic nervous system:

Innervates cardiac, smooth muscle and glands. Has two sets fo neurons between the CNS and effector organs. 1st has its cell bodies within the CNS and 2nd has its cell bodies within autonomic ganglia.

What are the two subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system? Explain each

The sympathetic division- smooth, cardiac muscle, glands. Most active during physical activity. Contains the three F's (fight, flight, freeze)

The parasympathetic division- smooth, cardiac muscle, glands. Regulates resting functions. Contains the three R's (rest, repose, repair)

What is the enteric nervous system?

The enteric nervous system is an independent branch of the PNS. Controls the smooth muscles of the digestive system.
