Gravestone epitaphs changed from medieval to the Georgian order. In periods 1&2: the epitaph made clear there was a rotting body in the ground with phrases such as " here lies..." there appears to be no fear of death and suggests that death mocks the passerby. Periods 2&3: the epitaph emphasizes the soul and the afterlife due to the influence of the Great Awakening. The symbol is of a cherub. "In memory of..." Period 3: Gravestones became re-Anglicanized and the epitaph emphasized accomplishments in life. "He was a good father.." Urn and willow tree, religion becomes secularized. |
