4 safe working practice for hauling items aloft?

-When tying a knot, leave 0.5 metre tail to ensure it doesn't accidentally come undone.

-Pull or pay out the line hand over hand.

-Always wear gloves.

-Take care when passing over window sills/ledges.

Hauling aloft words of command...

"Up top" when responding to/attracting the attention of the FF above.

"Below" when responding to/attracting the attention of the FF below.

"Stand from under" when throwing the long line bag out of the window.

"Clear there" from the bottom ff to confirm that you are clear below to throw.

"Haul aloft" from below to commence hauling an item aloft.

"Right" from up top to acknowledge hauling aloft.

"Well" from below to warn that the item being hauled is closed to the sill.

"Haul away from the building" from up top to below to begin lowering item, should be confirmed with "right" to acknowledge.

Parts of the ladder...

-Strings

The vertical part of the ladder, the sides.

-Round

The horizontal part of the ladder, the steps.

-Head

The top of the ladder.

-Horns

The end of the strings at the head of the ladder.

-Heel

The bottom of the ladder.

-Feet/Toes

The end of the strings at the heel of the ladder. -Pawls

The mechanism enabling extending sections to rest on a lower round.

-Head rollers

Wheels on the head to allow movement on an object.

-Head iron

The bar between head rollers.

Ladder terminology..

Slip - to remove a ladder from the ladder gantry on an appliance.

Pitch - to erect a ladder against a structure or building.

Extend - to raise the extending parts of a ladder.

Head in/out - to place/remove the head into/away from a building.

Head right/left - to move the head left/right to suit pitch requirements.

Heel in/out - to move the heel towards or away from the building.

Extend to lower - to raise the extending part of the ladder to clear pawls before lowering.

Lower(house) - to retract the extending parts of a ladder.

Launch - to push a ladder back onto the appliance gantry.

Plumb left/right - to adjust the angle of a ladder on even ground.

Footing - to stabilise the heel of a ladder with a FF foot. (Risk critical)

Inside/Outside - when describing the actions required by crew members to pitch a ladder, these terms are used. Inside refers to the side of the body nearest the centre of the ladder, and outside furthest.

What are four acceptable methods of carrying a line up a ladder?

- Line bag with arms through the straps.

- Line made up in a figure of 8, an arm through each loop.

- Continuous loop over head and shoulder, diagonally across body.

- Loose line with line down the back and fed upwards as you climb.

What are the 9m ladder pitch checks...

-The string closest to the opening is no more than 150mm from the frame.

-Three to five rounds above the sill. (Preferably 3)

-The round closest to the sill is just above and parallel to the sill.

-Able to fit a gloved hand around the round closest to the sill.

4 checks

What are the four safety considerations when working with the 9 metre ladder?

-Ground conditions

-Safe lifting technique

-Effective communication

-Safe person (PPE, aware of crew members etc)

What are the four types of ladder found on pumping appliance?

9 metre

135 Ladder

3 Piece short extension

Roof ladder

What is the top of the ladder called?

Head

What are the pawls on a ladder?

The mechanism that allows an extended section on a ladder to rest on the round of a lower extension.

What does the term launch mean?

To push a ladder back onto the gantry of an appliance

What term is used to erect a ladder against a building or structure?

Pitch

Does a crew on station carry out repairs on a ladder?

No

What is the part of the appliance where the 9 metre ladder is stowed called?

Beam gantry

Accessed gained by using the T-Handle.

Air should be dumped before use.

How much room behind the appliance is required to remove a ladder?

Minimum 10 metres

What does "Standby to slip" tell the crew to do?

Prepare to remove the ladder from the gantry

What is the order of commands when deploying a 9m ladder?

1 - "Standby to slip"

2 - "Release"

3 - "Slip"

4 - "Well"

5 - "Site heel number 3"

6 - "Under run"

7 - "Prepare to extend"

8 - "Extend"

9 - "Well"

10 - "Pawls engaged"

11 - "Head in"

12 - If adjustment needed, "Head in/out/left/right"

13 - "Ladder pitched, get to work"

What is the order of commands when making up a 9m ladder?

1 - "Head out"

2 - "Extend to lower"

3 - "Lower"

4 - "Clear behind"

5 - "Underrun"

6 - "Standby to launch"

7 - "Launch"

8 - "House"

9 - "Ladder secure"

What are the 3 safety checks when "heading in" a 135 ladder?

1 - Pawls securely engaged

2 - Yellow rings clear of the ground

3 - Jack pads flat on the floor

The following safety considerations apply when using a ladder:

-Assess potential access points before pitching.

-Make sure the ladder is long enough to complete the task.

-Make sure the ladder is placed on suitably safe ground, with a safe pitch angle.

-Be aware of overhead obstruction and hazards.

-Head of ladder on a stable point, and secure.

-Avoid knocking the ladder when working around it .

6 considerations

The following 4 considerations apply when working on a ladder:

-3 points of contact always maintained.

-Dont overreach, keep centre of mass within the strings of the ladder.

-Dont work on the top 3 rounds.

-Dont overload the ladder.(Unless with a casualty, 1 person max)

What is the command when a FF is approaching pawls when descending a ladder?

"Pawls, step in!"

When a FF is approaching the bottom of a ladder, what should they be instructed?

"Step off left/right" with the last 3 rounds counted down, and then "Step back" command is given to step off the ladder.

What are four risk critical actions a FF should take when mounting/dismounting a ladder?

-Before dismount at the head of the ladder, the sill must be swept for debris, and check for stability, and hand placed back on the round before dismount.

-The order of movement is foot, hand, hand, foot in order to maintain three points of contact.

-When stepping into a building, the floor should be swept with the foot to clear debris, and stamped to ensure it can take FFs weight.

-Ladder must always be footed by a FF before mounting. Upon descent, up top FF should kick twice on the ladder and shout "ladder" to gain the attention of below FF. When the person footing the ladder shouts "right", descent of the ladder can begin.

What part of the ladder are the rounds?

The steps, the horizontal parts connecting the strings.
