The dual alliance was signed by Austria-Hungary and Germany on October 7, 1879. Italy needed Austria-Hungary and Germany’s support against France, after Italy lost North Africa’s alliance. This alliance stated that Austria-Hungary and Germany would help Italy if they were attacked by the French as long as Italy did not provoke the French. It also stated that Italy would help Germany if Germany were to be attacked by France. lastly the treaty stated that in the event of war between Russia and Austria-Hungary, Italy would remain neutral(“Triple Alliance.”).
The first time the treaty was renewed was in February of 1887, it was amended to read that Germany would support Italian colonial ambitions in North Africa.
