It was in Sarajevo where Gavrilo Princip met up with Archduke Ferdinand and assassinated him and his wife Sofie. It didn't all happen at once. Gavrilo was part of the group called the Black Hand. Their plan was to spread themselves out on the same route as Ferdinand and attempt to kill him. The route was published earlier. There were seven of them and one of them was named Cabrinovic. He was the first one to attempt to kill Ferdinand. He threw a bomb at Ferdinand's car as it was passing him but forgot that it had a ten second delay on it. The bomb went off and killed many civilians and 2 officers. It did not damage Ferdinand's car. After the attempted assassination they took a detour from the route, and when they did, Gavrilo was waiting for them. He fired two shots. One landed in Ferdinand's neck and the other in Sophie's stomach. They were both killed almost immediately. Since Gavrilo was a Serb, Austria- Hungary, believed that Serbia had approved this plot to kill Ferdinand. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the triple alliance. Russia, Great Britain, France formed the triple entente. As the war continued to escalate more countries became involved and took sides against each other. The war lasted four years and the men that fought in the war lived and fought from trenches. Life in the trenches was horrible. When people died they put the bodies in the bottom of the trenches. The smell was sickening. They tried to cover up the bodies with mud but that made the smell worse. Soldiers that survived said that walking on the bodies felt like walking on a mattress. One of them passed a dead body and shook his hand every time he walked passed. Life in the trenches was horrid. Although the US had vowed not be involved in the war, by 1917, German submarines had sank many US merchant ships. The US was also angry due to the American people that also died on sunken ocean liners. Germany had also attempted to enter an agreement with Mexico to fight against the United States. In return, Mexico would receive land back that Mexico felt was owed to them from earlier conflicts with the United
