Honor, Santiago prefers hunger over shame. the old man is proud, saying that he will have fish to eat at home, even though he knows he hasn't any. Alos, Santiago faces danger by going out to far. He chooses to ignore the hardships of what could enstore. Santiago catches a marlin, which helps him gain back his pride and justifying his belief in himself. The man's attitude towards the fish shows the true extent of his honor. For Santiago takes pride in how strong his opponent is. "You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell for food...You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman. You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after. If you love him, it is not a sin to kill him” ( Hemingway 105). To die battling such a powerful fish would not be dishonorable to man. As the man sees the dead fish eaten by sharks, his body is torn up, but his inner spirit remain unconquered. Courage, Santiago was a man who did not show fear. He knew what he wanted and went for it. Hemingway once said "Courage is grace under pressure” this is the very definition of Santiago courage. He never complains about his bad luck, the bad things other say about him, the great fish who challenge him or the sharks that took his catch. “To hell with luck. He learned that his fate was not in his hands, all he could do is strive for the best he could be. For example, Santiago said, "Luck is a thing that comes in many forms and who can recognize her?" (Hemingway 117). The interesting fact that he never lets his bad luck cloud his decisions with self-pity. Santiago persevere through the pain, though all his trouble and hardships yet he never lose sight of his goal. Hemingway explains, though "the back and the hands hurt truly" (Hemingway 97), showing that he will never give up even if he knows he can't win.
